Relationship With God: How to Build a Stronger Relationship With God Every Day
A relationship with God is the foundation of the Christian life. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you begin a lifelong journey of knowing Him, trusting Him, and growing closer to Him every day.
God never intended Christianity to be only about attending church, following traditions, or checking off religious activities. Instead, He desires a genuine, personal relationship with His children.
Just as every healthy relationship requires communication, trust, love, and time together, your relationship with God grows as you intentionally spend time with Him.
The beautiful truth is that God desires a relationship with you even more than you desire one with Him.
Throughout Scripture, we see God continually calling people into fellowship with Himself. From Adam and Eve walking with God in the Garden of Eden to Jesus inviting His disciples to “follow Me,” the Bible reveals a God who longs to be close to His people.
Whether you’re a brand-new believer or you’ve followed Christ for many years, it’s never too late to grow deeper in your faith.
In this guide, you’ll discover:
- What a relationship with God really means
- Why your relationship with God matters
- 15 biblical ways to grow spiritually
- Daily habits that strengthen your faith

If you’re ready to experience more peace, wisdom, purpose, and confidence in your walk with Jesus Christ, let’s begin.
What Is a Relationship With God?
Knowing God Personally
A relationship with God is much more than believing He exists.
It is knowing Him personally through Jesus Christ.
Jesus said in John 17:3:
“Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.”
A personal relationship with God means:
- Trusting Him
- Loving Him
- Spending time with Him
- Obeying His Word
- Listening for His guidance
- Depending on Him daily
Just as friendships grow through consistent communication, your relationship with God grows as you intentionally spend time with Him.
Why Is a Relationship With God Important?
God Created You for Fellowship
From the very beginning, God’s desire was to have fellowship with humanity.
He walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Throughout Scripture, God continually pursued His people—not because He needed them, but because He loved them.
A strong relationship with God brings:
- Peace during difficult seasons
- Wisdom for decision-making
- Confidence in uncertainty
- Joy regardless of circumstances
- Direction for your purpose
- Spiritual maturity
- Hope for the future
When God becomes your greatest priority, every other area of life begins to fall into its proper place.
1. Read Your Bible Every Day
Let God Speak Through His Word
One of the greatest ways to strengthen your relationship with God is by reading the Bible consistently.
The Bible is God’s inspired Word.
Every time you open Scripture, God has the opportunity to teach, encourage, correct, and strengthen you.
If you’re unsure where to begin, consider reading:
- The Gospel of John
- Psalms
- Proverbs
- Romans
- James
You can also study topics such as:
- Faith
- Peace
- Healing
- Purpose
- Wisdom
- Forgiveness
- Hope
Don’t worry about reading large portions.
Even one chapter each day can transform your life over time.
2. Spend Time With God Every Day
Make Time for God’s Presence
Relationships require time.
The same is true with God.
Create a daily habit of spending uninterrupted time with Him.
You might:
- Pray
- Worship
- Read Scripture
- Sit quietly in His presence
- Journal
- Meditate on Bible verses
- Thank Him for His blessings
Even five or ten minutes each morning can become the foundation of a deeper spiritual life.
As your relationship grows, you’ll naturally desire to spend more time with Him.
3. Pray Without Ceasing
Prayer Is a Conversation With God
Prayer is not about saying perfect words.
It is about talking honestly with your Heavenly Father.
Philippians 4:6 reminds us:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Talk to God throughout your day.
Pray while driving.
Pray while cooking.
Pray during lunch.
Pray before meetings.
Prayer becomes a lifestyle—not just a daily task.
4. Seek the Holy Spirit
Let the Holy Spirit Guide Your Life
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach, comfort, and guide believers.
The Holy Spirit helps us:
- Understand Scripture
- Develop spiritual fruit
- Grow in wisdom
- Convict us of sin
- Strengthen our faith
- Discern God’s direction
Luke 11:13 says:
“How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Ask the Holy Spirit to lead every area of your life.
5. Worship God Daily
Worship Draws You Closer to God
Worship shifts your focus away from your problems and back to God’s greatness.
You don’t have to wait until Sunday morning.
Worship while:
- Driving
- Cleaning
- Exercising
- Cooking
- Walking
Praise reminds your heart who God is.
6. Keep a Prayer Journal
Record Your Journey With God
Writing your prayers helps you stay focused.
Include:
- Prayer requests
- Bible verses
- Gratitude lists
- Answered prayers
- Spiritual lessons
- Dreams
- Personal reflections
Over time, you’ll see how faithful God has been.
7. Practice Gratitude Every Day
Thankfulness Strengthens Faith
A grateful heart draws closer to God.
Write down:
- Three blessings each day
- One answered prayer
- One lesson God taught you
- One person you’re thankful for
Gratitude transforms your perspective.
8. Obey God’s Word
Love Is Demonstrated Through Obedience
Jesus said:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)
Obedience doesn’t earn God’s love.
It is a response to His love.
As you obey Him, your relationship grows stronger.
9. Spend Time With Other Believers
Grow in Christian Community
God never intended us to walk alone.
Surround yourself with people who encourage your faith.
Join:
- Bible studies
- Church groups
- Christian communities
- Prayer groups
- Mentorship programs
Healthy relationships strengthen spiritual growth.
10. Serve Others
Reflect the Heart of Jesus
Serving teaches humility.
Look for opportunities to:
- Volunteer
- Encourage others
- Give generously
- Help someone in need
- Share your gifts
When you serve others, you reflect Christ.
11. Trust God During Difficult Seasons
Faith Grows in Waiting
Some of your deepest spiritual growth will happen while waiting.
Trust Him when:
- Doors close
- Plans change
- Prayers seem unanswered
God is always working—even when you cannot see it.
Fast and Seek God’s Direction
Draw Near Through Fasting
Fasting is a biblical discipline that helps remove distractions and focus your heart on God.
Pair fasting with:
- Prayer
- Bible study
- Worship
- Reflection
Fasting reminds us that God is our greatest source of strength.
13. Memorize Scripture
Hide God’s Word in Your Heart
Choose one verse each week.
Meditate on it.
Repeat it throughout your day.
God often brings Scripture back to our minds exactly when we need it.
14. Listen More Than You Speak
Make Room to Hear God
Prayer is not only talking.
It is also listening.
After praying:
- Sit quietly.
- Reflect.
- Read Scripture.
- Ask God to speak through His Word.
God often speaks through Scripture, wisdom, conviction, and peace.
15. Keep Jesus First in Everything
Make Christ the Center of Your Life
When Jesus becomes your highest priority, every other relationship benefits.
Seek Him before:
- Career decisions
- Financial decisions
- Relationships
- Business opportunities
- Major life changes
Matthew 6:33 reminds us:
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Are You Saved?
Begin Your Relationship With Jesus Today
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, today can be the beginning of a brand-new life.
The Bible says in Romans 10:9:
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
You can pray:
“Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I ask You to forgive me, come into my life, and be my Lord and Savior. Help me follow You every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you sincerely prayed this prayer, begin reading the Bible, pray daily, and connect with a Bible-believing church where you can continue to grow.

Thoughts on Building a Relationship With God
Your relationship with God is the most important relationship you will ever have.
Everything else—your purpose, career, family, ministry, and business—flows from that foundation.
Growing closer to God doesn’t happen overnight. It happens through daily choices: opening your Bible, praying honestly, worshiping faithfully, obeying His Word, and trusting Him through every season.
God is not waiting for you to become perfect before drawing near to Him. He is inviting you to come just as you are.
As James 4:8 promises:
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
Take one step today. Open His Word. Spend a few quiet moments in prayer. Listen for His voice. As you consistently seek Him, you’ll discover that He has been pursuing a relationship with you all along.

I believe God is a part of each and every one of us. It doesn’t matter if we sense it or not, He is there. He is a part of us. And if he is, why are we afraid? What are we afraid of? If this amazing power is within us all, why wouldn’t we act like it and do the amazing things each of us can do?
Hello Kayleigh! God is all around us and His presence is always there. We just have to make ourselves available to Him to feel His presence within us.
I have been meditating for a couple of months now. At first I did it for my peace of mind, to reduce stress. But I soon realized that this is a way to communicate with God. It’s pretty amazing but as soon as I am at peace it’s like God is there, in the room with me. I highly recommend it to anyone!
How do you do this? How do you get your mind to stay still and meditate? I’ve tried but it doesn’t seem to be working.
Hello Roberta! The first thing you need to do is to find a nice quiet place. You can start off by reading your bible, spending time with God and listening to the Holy Spirit.
Try guided meditation at first. It might work wonders as it did for me. And don’t stress about your thoughts bombarding your mind. Just acknowledge they are there and let them pass and get back to focusing on your breathing. By doing this daily for even 5 minutes if you can’t more, you will become better at it.
Hello Grace! I do agree that when you meditate on God’s words, everything will get better.
Hello Grace! Yes it’s very important to pray and seek God for guidance! It’s so good that you realize that it is a way to communicate with God.
Since the beginning of this year I started a gratitude journal where I write daily adding all the things and people that make my life better. It’s been a very helpful and insightful experience.
Hello Alondra! It’s great that you have started your gratitude journal.
I have started keeping a daily journal ever since the pandemic started. I was scared and this was a way to get those bad thoughts from my mind onto paper. I add things I’m grateful for, things that happened that day, what I could have done better and so on. It has strengthened my mind and showed me that I have plenty to be grateful for.
Hello Carlyn! I’m so happy you have stated to use a daily journal. It is good to hear that it has strengthened your mind.
