What Is The Daniel Fast in the Bible?
Fasting is a way to humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21). King David said, “I humbled my soul with fasting” (Psalm 69:10). In the meantime, you may find yourself relying on God more fully for strength when you fast. Gradually, fasting and prayer can help us hear God more clearly. In the end, you will know how to hear God’s voice to make right decisions in your life.
Similarly, the Daniel Fast is a method of spiritual fasting based on the prophet Daniel’s experience fasting according to the book of Daniel in the Bible. With this in mind, there are two passages in specific that the Daniel Fast is based on:
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables [pulses] to eat and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12
“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” Daniel 10: 2-3
From this experience Daniel was said to gain knowledge, wisdom, spiritual understanding, favor, and even better appearance (Daniel 1:15-20) in addition to answered prayer and spiritual insight (Daniel 10: 11-12).
So the idea behind the fast is that you would set aside other foods and focus on eating plant-based meals as an act of worship and sacrifice.
How Long is The Daniel Fast in the Bible?
To begin with, every year around this time I will do the Daniel Fast for 21 days, so on May 18, I will start my Daniel fast and end it on June 7. In fact, it is typically meant to be followed for just 21 days. As an example, this length of time is based off of Daniel’s decision in chapter 10 to deprive himself of “pleasant food,” meat, and wine for three weeks while he sought God in prayer.
What Are The Benefits of the Daniel Fast?
For instance, the Daniel Fast or Daniel Diet is based upon the prophet Daniel’s dietary and spiritual experiences as recorded in the Book of Daniel in the Bible. Yet, it’s a type of partial fast that focuses very heavily on vegetables, herbs and other healthy whole foods but leaves out any animal sources of protein.
In the same way, the Daniel Fast is specifically referenced in the Bible in two sections of the Book of Daniel:
Daniel 1:12, which states, “Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables [pulses] to eat and water to drink.”
Daniel 10: 2-3, which says, “In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”
Simultaneously, Daniel completed the 21 day fast, and he was more healthier and stronger than the other servants who have consumed meat. Immediately, the prison guards saw the difference in Daniel’s body compared to all the other servants. Furthermore, they’ve realize it was something different about Daniel compare to the others. However, they did not understand or know that it was Jesus Christ as the true living God.
