What Is the Spirit of Poverty?
The Spirit of Poverty is not just a metaphor. It’s a real demonic system that attacks the mindset, resources, and destiny of God’s people. It’s subtle—masking itself in false humility, fear, and cycles of just barely getting by. This spirit is strategic and oppressive—keeping you small, silenced, and in survival mode when you were called to build, multiply, and walk in overflow.
This spirit is not about a dollar amount—it’s a mindset, a stronghold, and a curse that often travels through generations, masquerading as “normal life” or “hard times.” But God never created you to stay bound by lack.
Jesus Christ came not only to save your soul but to break every yoke — including the spirit of poverty (Isaiah 10:27).

What Does the Bible Say About Poverty?
Let’s be clear—poverty is not God’s will for His children.
📖 Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV):
“But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth…”
📖 3 John 1:2 (NKJV):
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”
📖 Proverbs 10:22 (NIV):
“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.”
God desires for you to prosper holistically—spirit, soul, and body. That includes your finances. The enemy wants you broke, weary, and distracted. But Jesus said in John 10:10, “I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
The Spirit of Poverty is sent to make you question God’s goodness, settle for survival, and stay disconnected from Kingdom influence.
Generational Curses and the Spirit of Poverty
Many believers are living under inherited financial curses. This often looks like:
- A family history of poverty or government dependence
- Always starting over financially
- Being surrounded by others who stay small and mock ambition
- Experiencing shame or rejection for prospering
- Being taught growing up that money is evil or only for the world

- Talk yourself out of promotions or opportunities
- See money as evil instead of a tool
But friend, you are not cursed. In Jesus Christ, you have been redeemed from the curse (Galatians 3:13). You just have to enforce it.

I honestly think God wants us all to be rich. Why? Because when we have more money we can do so much more good. There are so many homeless people, children that need money and a home and we could help so much more if we had the money to do so. I took my gifts for granted for years. I didn’t have confidence in myself and always thought that I am not good enough or that people won’t want to hear what I have to offer. I was wrong. I have gifts just like anyone else and I am now using them and I’ve never been happier.

I didn’t think I was good enough or that I had something to offer, to help others. I finally realized that my life was slipping away and I wasn’t doing the things I absolutely love doing. Yes if we do have more money, we can help the poor more and give to help others. That is exactly what God wants us to do, to help others and give to the people that needs our help the most.
Yes, the more money we have, the more we can help others but even if we don’t have a lot right now we can still help. I find that even when I don’t have a lot of money I still have some to give away. And by doing so I realize that I actually do have money. The more I give (with good intentions and without expecting anything in return), the more I receive.

We have been taught that money is the root of all evil so people won’t try to become wealthy on earth. I believe the opposite. If more people had money, there will possibly be less homelessness and more people doing good in life. You gain abundance so you help others along the way. Nice article.
