In our spiritual journey, we often face unseen challenges that can hinder our walk with God. Among these challenges is the presence of monitoring spirits. These malevolent entities are sent to spy on us, gather information, and ultimately sabotage the plans God has for our lives. Understanding what monitoring spirits are, how they operate, and how to protect ourselves from their influence is crucial for anyone serious about fulfilling their God-given purpose through Jesus Christ.

What is a Monitoring Spirit?
A monitoring spirit, sometimes referred to as a “familiar spirit,” is a demonic entity that observes and reports on an individual’s activities with the intent of hindering or derailing their spiritual progress. These spirits are often sent by the enemy to keep tabs on believers, especially those walking in their God-given purpose. The goal of a monitoring spirit is to gather information about your weaknesses, fears, and plans so that they can be used against you.
In the Bible, we see examples of monitoring spirits at work. For instance, in 1 Samuel 18:10-12, King Saul was tormented by an evil spirit that caused him to become jealous of David. This spirit monitored David’s actions and reported back to Saul, fueling his paranoia and leading to multiple attempts on David’s life.
How Monitoring Spirits Operate
Monitoring spirits are crafty and subtle in their approach. They can operate through people, objects, or even through dreams. Here are some of the ways these spirits can infiltrate our lives:
- Through People: Monitoring spirits often work through individuals who are close to us, such as family members, friends, or colleagues. These individuals may not even be aware that they are being used by these spirits. They might ask probing questions, gossip about your plans, or subtly discourage you from pursuing your goals. Proverbs 16:28 warns us about such individuals: “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.”
- Through Objects: In some cases, monitoring spirits can attach themselves to objects in your environment. These could be items given to you by someone with ill intentions or objects that have been cursed or used in occult practices. It’s important to be discerning about the things you bring into your home. Deuteronomy 7:26 advises, “Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.”
- Through Dreams: Monitoring spirits can also infiltrate your dreams, presenting themselves as familiar figures or situations. They might try to manipulate your thoughts, create confusion, or plant seeds of doubt about your God-given purpose. In Job 33:14-16, we read, “For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings.”
Why You Should Guard Your Dreams, Goals, and Purpose in Christ
One of the most effective ways to protect yourself from monitoring spirits is by being careful about whom you share your dreams, goals, and purpose with. Not everyone in your life is meant to know the intimate details of what God has planned for you. Here are a few reasons why discretion is essential:
- Not Everyone Has Your Best Interests at Heart: Even those closest to you can harbor jealousy, envy, or other negative emotions. Sharing your dreams and goals with the wrong people can open the door for them to be used by monitoring spirits to discourage or sabotage you. In Genesis 37:5-8, we see how Joseph’s brothers reacted with envy and hatred when he shared his dreams with them, ultimately leading them to plot against him.
- Premature Exposure Can Attract Opposition: When you share your plans prematurely, you give the enemy an opportunity to strategize against you. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” By keeping your plans to yourself until the right time, you minimize the chances of unnecessary opposition.
- Guarding Your Purpose Ensures Focus: When you are selective about whom you share your purpose with, you maintain focus and clarity. Sharing your purpose with too many people can lead to confusion, conflicting advice, and ultimately, a dilution of the vision God has given you. Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Biblical Examples of Discretion
The Bible provides us with numerous examples of individuals who exercised discretion in their spiritual journeys, thereby protecting themselves from the schemes of the enemy.
- Nehemiah: When Nehemiah was called by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, he didn’t immediately share his plans with everyone. In Nehemiah 2:12, he says, “I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem.” By keeping his plans close to his chest, Nehemiah was able to avoid unnecessary opposition and complete the task God had given him.
- Mary, the Mother of Jesus: When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would give birth to the Savior, she didn’t run and tell everyone. Instead, Luke 2:19 tells us, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Mary understood the importance of guarding the revelation she had received from God.
- Jesus Christ: Even Jesus exercised discretion in His ministry. In Mark 1:44, after healing a leper, Jesus told him, “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.” Jesus knew that revealing certain things prematurely could hinder His mission.
How to Protect Yourself from Monitoring Spirits
Now that we understand what monitoring spirits are and why it’s essential to guard our dreams, goals, and purpose in Christ, let’s explore some practical steps you can take to protect yourself.
- Pray for Discernment: Ask God for the gift of discernment so that you can recognize when a monitoring spirit is at work in your life. 1 Corinthians 12:10 mentions discernment as one of the spiritual gifts given to believers. With discernment, you can identify the individuals, objects, or situations that may be used by these spirits and take appropriate action.
- Cover Your Plans in Prayer: Before you share your dreams, goals, or purpose with anyone, cover them in prayer. Ask God to protect your plans and to guide you in sharing them with the right people at the right time. Psalm 91:1-2 is a powerful scripture to declare over your life: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'”
- Be Selective About Whom You Share With: Not everyone needs to know what God is doing in your life. Be selective about whom you share your plans with, and ensure that they are trustworthy, spiritually mature, and supportive of your journey. Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” However, even in the abundance of counselors, discretion is key.
- Destroy Any Ungodly Objects: If you suspect that any objects in your environment may be used by monitoring spirits, remove and destroy them. Acts 19:19 provides a powerful example of believers burning their occult books and objects after coming to faith in Christ: “A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.”
- Keep Your Spiritual Armor On: Ephesians 6:10-18 instructs us to put on the full armor of God so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. By staying spiritually armored, you protect yourself from the attacks of monitoring spirits.

Yes Monitoring Spirits Are Real
Monitoring spirits are real, and they pose a significant threat to anyone seeking to fulfill their God-given purpose through Jesus Christ. However, by understanding their tactics and taking steps to protect yourself, you can thwart their plans and stay on course with the assignment God has given you. Remember, not everyone is meant to know your dreams, goals, or the purpose God has for you. Exercise discretion, seek God’s guidance, and surround yourself with spiritually mature individuals who will support and uplift you in your journey.
As you continue on your spiritual path, keep these words from Isaiah 54:17 close to your heart: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord.” May you walk in wisdom, protected and empowered to fulfill the glorious destiny God has prepared for you through His Son, Jesus Christ.
